Teaching Credentials/Experience:  Masters Diploma in Oriental Medicine and has studied advanced Asian Bodywork Therapies to include:  400 hours Shiatsu, Tuina, Acupressure, Food Energetics, Cupping, Guasha and Moxibustion  (Acupressure & Massage college); 150 hours Shiatsu (Shinzo Fujimaki, Body Wisdom Massage School; 200 hours Qigong & Yang Tai Chi  Teacher Training (Charles Frances Farrell, Qigong Master American Eagle Tai chi & Qigong); Qigong, Taoism, Tao Te Ching (Ken Cohen, Qigong Master); Reiki Master Practicioner, Rev. Lynda Raphael.

She has been a FL Board of Massage Therapy Provider#50-4694 since 2004.  FL Licensed in Massage FLMA#26594 since 1987 and FL Licensed in Acupuncture FLAP#1884 since 2003. Kathleen was FL Licensed as a Physical Therapist Assistant from 1995-2003.

Course Descriptions

Acupressure Fundamentals 8 CE

Students will learn key acupuncture points that are used to relieve pain, calm the mind, promote mental alertness, and balance the body systems. Acupressure can easily be integrated with massage practice and can aid in muscle relaxation and pain treatments with little effort of the therapist.

Emphasis is on point location, energy palpation, stimulation of points using finger pressure, piezoelctric stimulation, electrostimulation (TENS), magnets and moxibustion (heat).  Akabane Testing-Jingwell /Yu Method will be demonstrated for deep level energy correction. Various methods for assessing energy imbalance will be discussed including observation, quantitative pulse analysis, acupoint palpation, biofeedback devices, history and intake form.

Manual provided. Equipment/ Supplies are not provided for practice exchanges. Please bring a massage table and linens/towel.  Bring own TENS  or ETPS unit or Piezoelectric device.  www.Lhasaoms.com has good prices for low cost equipment. Incense sticks supplied for akabane testing.

Acu Release Chinese Tuina Massage 8 CE

Students will learn 12 basic Chinese Tuina Massage Techniques & Acu-Release technique to open up key meridian flows. Tuina Techniques do not use lubrication and may be used for subacute inflammatory conditions with herbal pastes and linaments.  The techniques can integrate easily with Swedish, Sport and Medical Massage applications.  A general flow will be covered with emphasis on Revolving Acu-points for Soft Tissue Release.

Specific Shoulder joint Orthopedic ROM Testing will be learned with emphasis on Functional Assessment.                                                                               Manual techniques to specific Acu-points will be covered combined with  joint ROM- a technique called “Revolving”.

Excellant for rotator cuff, impingement, tendinitis and adhesive capsilitis (frozen shoulder) conditions.

Asian Cupping & Guasha (flat) Stone Massage (8 CE)

Asian Cupping  for Spa with Acu-Cups (8 CE)

Course Content- Students will learn the indications, contraindications and safe application of Asian Cupping. Asian Cupping is the application of small cups to the skin for therapeutic effect to the skin, muscle’s, fascia, trigger points, acupoints and meridian’s of the body. An introduction will be provided through discussion and live demonstration for massage applications and will include myofascial release, acupoint / trigger point stimulation and lymph drainage.

Course Content: Students will learn the indications, contraindications and safe application for Guasha Flat Stone Massage. This technique is used for myofascial release and to release blockages called “blood stasis” in Chinese Medicine. This technique can also be used in facial rejuvenation protocols to treat wrinkles. An introduction will be provided through discussion and live demonstration for massage applications and will include a full back application and facial rejuvenation protocol. Equipment provided and practice exchange as time allows. Please bring linens and beach towel or bathing suit.

Spa Professional: Vichy & Exfoliation (6 CE)

Class Limit: 6

Course Content- Students will learn how to apply an Exfoliation scrub, Bodywrap, Vichy and full-body Hydrotub soak in a professional wet room environment common to many Resort and Destination Spa’s. Therapeutic Aromatherapy will be introduced for Spa applications. This course is 20% lecture and 80% hands-on. Bathing suits are required for Lab portion in Spa Wet Room. Students will get to give and receive  Vichy & Scrub Exfoliation Treatments in a professional fully equipped Spa Wet Room. 


Introduction to Shiatsu Flow  8 CE

Class Limit: 16

Course Content- Students will explore  Japanese Techniques of Pressing, Kneading and Beating in the supine and prone positions to experience how giving and receiving Shiatsu feels. We will discuss the common meridians responsible for chronic headache, neck and back pain, abnormal spinal curvature, sciatica, piriformis syndrome, tight hamstrings and calve and foot problems. Therapists will explore their physical restrictions and will discuss the emotional and spiritual blockages to complete healing. This class is 40% lecture and palpation and 60% hands-on. Sequences will be demonstrated on a traditional Shiatsu futon mat and introduce students to floor work.

Students may select tables or mat work to experience Shiatsu and discover how to integrate what they learn into their own practice.

Mats will not be provided for practice. Students are required to bring their own mat or blankets (3 inch thick cushioning/full size bed width) for floor work. Please wear loose clothing and bring linens and blanket.

Shiatsu Flow (Professional Training) 48 CE (Level 1 & 2)

Students will learn a comprehensive 75 minute Traditional Shiatsu mat flow. Emphasis is on the student learning how to be comfortable while doing matwork (traditional Japanese Shiatsu Futon) and how to use specific massage techniques to balance the energy pathways of the body. Common balancing acupoints by location and indication will be introduced but  emphasis is on stretching the meridians and applying specific Shiatsu techniques of  pressing, rubbing, kneading and beating.  Kyo-Jitsu Method uses two handed sensitivity to balance points and meridian channels and will be learned and applied with all techniques.

The supine position will be explored with sensitivity and intention to tonify the system using a predominately Yin approach.  The prone position will be explored and its indication for treatment of Urinary Bladder meridian flow imbalance exhibiting chronic headache and neckache, spinal pain and abnormal curvature, low back pain, hip pain, sciatica, knee pain, and ankle/foot pain.

Comprehensive Manual with photo’s and sequences provided.  Students need to bring blankets for practice (3 inches thick, twin bed width is best) www.matsmatsmats.com has great prices for Shiatsu mats. Wear loose clothing. Bring 2-4 small cushions for positioning.

When all four positions are used a Shiatsu flow may be 80 min to 110 minutes long. Many Spa menus advertise  1.5  hour up to 2 hour Shiatsu sessions. shiatsu Flow Level 2 – teaches side lying and sitting positions.

Students will learn how to assess the Hara (abdomen) for energy imbalance and learn correction technique. Front MU Organ Diagnostic Points will be palpated for organ referral sensitivity. Learn 2-point acupoint combination treatment to correct each meridian/organ flow. The sidelying position will be explored and its indication for treatment for Gallbladder Meridian flow imbalance exhibiting  chronic headache, chronic upper trapezius and neck spasm, low back spasm, piriformis syndrome, and IT Band tenderness.

The Sitting position will be explored allowing enhanced cervical and trunk range of motion and stretching to those areas. May be used at beginning or ending of a session and can enhance meditative awareness and mental alertness.
